Lando Norris lit up Albert Park with a sensational pole position for the Australian Grand Prix, edging out teammate Oscar Piastri and reigning champ Max Verstappen in a dramatic Qualifying session.

In a nail-biting showdown, Norris posted a blistering 1m 15.096s lap to snatch P1 at the last moment—after his initial effort was scrapped for track limits. His margin over Piastri was a mere 0.084s.

As for his chances in the race, Norris told F1TV: “I’m confident that the car’s in a good position, but we’ve also never run in the wet. We know how quick Max and Red Bull are in the rain, so let’s wait and see.

“[There will be] many opportunities for everyone, but also a lot of new things that we’re going to be learning along the way, so we’ll see tomorrow.”

Piastri, meanwhile, was left with a bittersweet feeling. The Aussie fan-favourite came painfully close to securing his first-ever F1 pole, but in the end, he had to settle for P2 in front of a roaring home crowd.

“I’m pretty happy,” he admitted. “It’s probably one position further back than I would’ve liked, but it’s a great start to the year and great to have the team on the front row. Now we’ll reset and see what tomorrow has in store.”

Piastri pinpointed some small but costly errors: “I think it’s probably a little bit in a couple of places. I think Sector 3 I lost a little bit of time compared to the lap before from Q2. I also locked up there and went off in the first run of Q3, so I didn’t really want to do that twice.”

With McLaren locking out the front row, it’s a dream scenario for the team heading into Sunday. But with Verstappen in third—and unpredictable weather on the horizon—Melbourne could be in for a wild race day.
